Upclose With Kuffour (@Kuffour_gh)

Our search for upcoming artistes; popularly called the “Underground” is not over. We are always on the look to discover real talents and put them out for world to get familiar with. Our next discovery is KUFFOUR! Actually, he is not a new discovery; just that we finally had the opportunity to have a little chat with the rapper and get to know who he really is…

Kuffour has been a rapper for sometime now and due to his talent and hardwork, he was able to make it to the Dj Black’s weekly Cypher, which is aired on ViaSat 1 Television (Ghana). We decided to get Kuffour on the seat and throw some questions to him, which we believe are questions most people would ask if they met him in person and interested to know more about him and his music career…

This is the conversation we had with him…

LSGH: Is Kuffour your real name? If yes, why did you prefer to use that as your stage name?

Kuffour: Derek Kwaku Amoah is and has always been my real name. Nontheless the title Kuffour has always been present for as far as I could remember. Most importantly it is my artist name because almost 95percent of the people I know and acquanitances have always refered to me as Kuffour.

LSGH: When did you realize you had the gift of making music?

Kuffour: To be quite honest, I really can’t pinpoint exactly when I discovered I had a gift for music. But the bottom line tho is I have always been a music lover and a rap addict growing up. But I will also wanna add that the real journey started somewhere 2 years ago.

LSGH: Do you remember the first song you ever recorded?

Kuffour: The first song I did was quite ridiculous but at the same time fun. Sort of like a virgin encountering sex for the first time… I guess we all know what it entails… But I wasn’t really bothered because I knew With time perfection would be attained.

LSGH: What do you do aside music?

Kuffour: Aside from music I am also a certified graduate of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s radio and TV school where I studied Broadcast Journalism which entailed Presenting,Disc Jockeying, Producing amongst others. Currently I am still in School studying Business Administration and I am also the Ghana representative at Topnaijamusic.com which is one of Nigeria’s pronounced Online Music Promo Site.

LSGH: All the songs you made, which of them is your all time favorite?

Kuffour: I think the best song I will pick amongst the bunch I have done so far will be “Layin ’em down” and then perhaps “MiSipiti” simply because recording those songs was exactly where I finally came to terms with music and I always define that as my reality point.
Also After dropping that song, I remember meeting people and getting all that positive response was just overwhelming. Some even go the extra mile to bust out my lines on that song to me and that to me is one of the most profound feeling a man can ever experience.
But initially it was just to prove to myself and the people around me that I could rap.

LSGH: Which artistes are wishing to work with someday? Underground or Famous…

Kuffour: Well I intend to work with both famous and underground artists like MI, Blitz, Phyno, Penom, Edem, Efya, Becca, E.L, Bradez, EdiYoung, Rumor, Olamide, Barima Pages, Solace, Gyamfi amongst others. I choose these cats not because they are famous but because listening to them always brings out the best in me and their music is basically my major source of motivation. So as time goes on I guess things will happen in due time. One day at a time…

LSGH: What inspires you when you are putting down lyrics?

Kuffour: Like most rappers I guess It wouldn’t be a bad idea to say my environment. But to tell you the truth my major inspiration comes from the Dope Emcees I listen to everyday. And one major factor contributing to that effect is the fact that they are real in terms of their flow patterns, lyrics et-cetera.

LSGH: Who is your favorite rapper of all time?

Kuffour: My all time favourite Emcee has and will always be MI Abaga. Before recording my laying ’em down tune I was just not that serious and prepared to dive deeper into music so most recordings I did before was just for me and some few friends around me. The whole idea was to have fun at the same time throw out punches people will relate to.
But hearing M.I tunes from inception motivated me highly and also made me realise I could have fun at the same time get serious with it.

LSGH: In your book, who is the worse rapper you ever listened to?

Kuffour: In my books my worse rapper is that rapper who will jump on a beat and not fully deliver. My opinion about music is not just about expressing yourself on a nice beat but going further to make sure you are as real and deep as possible. Funny enough certain whack rappers tend to think music is all about rhyming but whats the point if an emcee rhymes and it doesn’t move your audience in any way?

LSGH: What plans do you have for the future concerning music?

Kuffour: The plans I have for the future with regards to music is to be the best I can, regardless of how tough the competition is and will be. I know God will take care of the rest.

LSGH: Any upcoming projects, collaborations, etc?

Kuffour: Most defnitly… I have an E.P coming up soon titled “BITS AND PIECES” which will feature acts like Gemini, BarimaPages, EdiYoung amongst others. The whole idea is to render to my people a mixture of everything music. But until then I intend to be dropping a couple of freestyles and singles…

LSGH: Any word for your listeners and fans out there?

Kuffour: All I will say to my people out there is Kuffour is here to experience a funtime with music and at the same time rock each individual’s world of music.
So if you in love with GHRap, NaijaRap, Afro plus HipHop, then I’m that guy, simply self-defined as a multiple Emcee…
