How 3 Artists Gave Dancehall Music A Relevant Stand In Ghana
Music is perfect but the dancehall genre has taken a meteoric but surprising rise. But mind you there are many artists that are making the dancehall theme a success but 3 names are always in the minds and mouth of Ghanaians.
Let’s have a little timeline of music in Ghana before I begin this piece. It started with highlife music and with highlife, the major genre sprung up with awesome sub genres like palmwine highlife and burger highlife. Then it evolved into hiplife, a genre started by Reggie Rockstone which happened to fuse hip hop music with traditional highlife. The hiplife genre stood tall for two decades until neo hiplife sprung up.
Neo hiplife was the beginning of the end for hiplife as new artists like 5Five, Ebo and Asem started to fuse the genre with afro pop. Then hip hop had its grounds and gave way for classic acts like Skillions, Sarkodie and Kwaw Kese. Then it ended with Afro Pop in 2010’s which revolutionized the fusion of African sounds, pop music and dance.
In the midst of all the rising genres, an artist called Batman (Now known as Samini) gave rise to the dance hall feel. He rode the waves to win awards and gain recognitions which solidified him as an artist but unfortunately not a genre. Another artist called Bandana came through for the game, who also spawned good hits like Bandana From Ghana and No Problem. But he vanished from the scene, rebranded himself to become the worldwide sensation called Shatta Wale. The rise of Samini also gave in for his business acumen as he groomed another unknown artist who evolved into another worldwide award-winning act called Stonebwoy.
Dancehall music finally had a stand in the Ghanaian industry. Honestly there isn’t any day that a dancehall song wouldn’t rise from either of these 3. The 3 major rivals helped in solidifying the Ghanaian Dancehall brand into every ear of Ghanaians.
Actually there are many artists in Ghana that participate in the forming of the wonderful genre but these 3 have been a major topic of discussion, publications and media. A huge rivalry has stretched itself for more than 5 years which has given Ghana good music, good beefs, good videos and notable awards. Samini has won many awards including MOBO awards and Ghana music awards.
Shatta Wale has sold out concerts, won awards and rocked the nation including the former president. And Stonebwoy has toured, had endorsement deals like Tommy Hilfiger and garnered coveted awards like BET and AFRIMMA.
These three might not always be in good terms but they respect the music game and profit notably from it. Their success has made it extremely for a lot of dancehall acts to penetrate the Ghanaian industry.
Honestly, beef is good but we need a more competitive new act or a new genre to spawn itself. Who knows? Time will tell.
