“You can really feel that something impressive is happening with digital music in Africa now,” says Ulrik Cahn, Vice President of Digital Business Emerging Markets, in 2017’s IFPI Global Music Report. Indeed, Ghana has a population of 23.35 million people and 36.6 million mobile subscriptions.

That’s 129% smart phone penetration. Thanks to this embrace of the internet, there are now more opportunities for Ghanaian music artists to distribute their music online than ever before. But to do this, they need to understand the ins and outs of online music promotion. If you’re an artist, here are some tips.

Promote music in Ghana website

Start a website

There are many ways to successfully promote your music online, but setting up a website is the best place to start. It will be your musical home online that other promotion channels direct back to. If professional website design is out of your budget now, you don’t need to spend much or make your website too complicated – these days there are free or cheap templates you can use to create a decent looking website.

Be savvy on social media

According to the Annual Ghana Social Media Report, Social Media penetration in Ghana is at 40% and rising. Having a presence on all social media channels allows you not only to grow your following but talk with your fans.

Get a mailing list

Whilst social media is a great way to start, a mailing list is still the best way to build intimate connections with your fans and let them know about your latest releases and events. This is because recent changes in the algorithm of social media sites like Facebook mean that only a few people who ‘like’ your page will see your posts. Mailing lists on the other hand are an authentic and free way to build authentic connections.

Streaming and Downloads

There are a lot of streaming in download websites in Ghana and Loud Sound GH is one of those. These websites offer legal free music downloads and streaming. Foreign streaming websites such as Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and others are also gaining ground in Ghana.

There has never been a more exciting time to be a musician in Ghana. With more and more people embracing social media and digital music, now is the time to join the African music revolution! No longer do you need a record label or distribution company to do it for you: there is so much you can do yourself. Remember that persistence is the key so stay strong in the face of adversity and get your music out there!
