Sarkodie is by far the most successful rapper in Ghanaian history with his awards chopped and stages mounted so far…Fast forward to these recent times and arguments rising from the struggle of who Is G.O.A.T, is he the best rapper?
Well, arguably he passes to be, with all the success chopped and all the fans amassed right. Now let’s look at it from the ‘west’,let’s look into the hip-hop scenes since Rap Originated from the West. Some rappers like Andre3000, Rakim and Even Notorious B.I.G are not that decorated when it comes to awards they chopped in their careers but they are always seen in most top 5 rapper ratings, if awards really matter how do these rappers get onto this chart ratings, why are we not seeing more of Kanye West on this charts?
Is he not the rapper with most Grammy winnings, or the Grammies are not the standards anymore? After marinating on all these questions and answering them in your head, what are the standards for judging who is best rapper. Let’s quote the Billboards criteria used to judge greatest rapper of all time
“Diehard fans, music nerds and critics love lists. But in rap, rankings like this take on a special level of import: aside from moving a crowd (shouts to Rakim), MC means proving you’re the best. In no other genre do artists so blatantly express their desire to outdo competition. That made Billboard’s editorial list a more high-stakes undertaking than usual. Many favorites — Kane, Drake, KRS — didn’t make it, and each of those omissions hurts deep down. Note: we’re ranking these folks as MCs, not artists. That’s why Dr. Dre and Kanye West, for example, two legendary producer-rappers who don’t match the mic skills of those listed here, were left out. Even Tupac, perhaps the most influential rapper ever globally, is arguably known more for great songwriting than dominant bars”
I quoted this long write up from The Billboard Charts so we can all marinate on and finally think about who a great MC or great rapper is. You can be a successful rapper yet not A great rapper, note the difference. Back to the question is sarkodie the best rapper. Now let’s judge him by his bars but not his awards or success chopped.
Sarkodie addresses a lot of social issues which earns him the title of a great rapper but back to the billboard criteria that don’t count right, you’re judged by your lyrical content, how well you stay on concept, your puns or paronomasia , how you drop puzzles and still manage to tell a story, rhymes count too but it all ends up in this few mentioned. So does sarkodie drop puns(Paronomasia), Puzzles(Enigma) and tell stories(stay on concept)? I’m not here to Judge Who the best rapper is I’m just here to tell you how to judge who you think is the G.O.AT right now in Ghana. Thank you
