Artiste Of The Month: Emmanuel Andrews Samini
From Batman to Batman-Samini to Samini! Over a decade in the music industry and still fresh as new:
The LoudSoundGH artiste of the month of October is Emmanuel Andrews Samini, who is simply called Samini in the entertainment world. The dancehall artiste started music way back when he was a teenager and it all started when he joined the church choir at the age of 14… He got into music professionally in 1999 where he started collaborating with other musicians. He started his basic and primary education at Holy Family Basic School and attended his senior secondary at St Margaret Mary Secondary School at Dansoman (Accra). Samini hails from WA in the upper west region of Ghana, and his style of music is a combination of Hiplife, Dancehall, Reggae and HipHop… I believe he is the only African artiste with a peculiar music brand. He calls his style “African Dancehall” and he has been the only “African Dancehall King” till date!
Samini went through a series re-branding in his musical journey. He was first known as Batman, later on went to Batman Samini and then to Samini. I see that to be a very smooth transition and people did not have to get confused with the branding process… Samini was one of the few Dancehall/Reggae artistes who were able to make it to the spotlights through hard work, determination and that “Can Do” spirit. Online promotion or hype was very limited those days, and it takes an artiste to be original and exceptional to win the heart of music lovers. Because getting to the top those days was all about originality, you continue to stay as the people’s favorite if only you keep giving them what they expect of you.
Samini released his first studio album which was titled “Dankwasere” in 2004 followed by other Albums like Samini (2007), Dagaati (2008), and a whole lot of singles and collaborations. His recent album is “Next Page” which got loads of hit songs on there as well… His album “Samini” which had hit songs like “Odo” and the main theme song “Samini” attracted loads of awards to the African Dancehall King. The album made him pick up 3 awards at the Ghana Music Awards (2007)… Before that, he won “Best African Artiste” at the MOBO Awards in 2006. He also won the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Performer… Other impressive things followed up which includes him being an MTN ambassador…
He has performed alongside Sean Paul, Akon, Kevin Little, Shaggy, Wayne Wonder, Damien Marley, Bennie Man, Jay-Z, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Culture (of Blessed Memory) and Steel Pulse. He collaborated with Steel Pulse and Etana from Jamaica and recently with Popcaan on his new single “Violate“… He also did a collaboration with Chris Chameleon on the song “She’s My World” which is a song to create global warming awareness…. He has received international recognition and toured the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the Netherlands…
Samini has grown in all sectors of his life and can now boast of a top class Restaurant/Pub called DanceStardom located in his hood Dansoman (Accra). This has been one of his laid down projects of the year and its a huge success! Samini also started a project this year dubbed “Light A Million Lives” which was an initiative to help the less privileged to own a free rechargeable solar lantern for domestic use. Samini kept saying he knows how life is for some people because he has been down that road and knows how it feels to live in such situations. He is also planning to bring up an NGO that will take care of homeless kids and those in need.
