Artiste Of The Month: Denning Edem Agbeviadey
Since Hip-Life was introduced in Ghana, it brought together a lot of talented artistes from different musical backgrounds and variety of styles. Hip Life was most times about Twi rap until other languages started coming in when the genre was widely embraced by Ghanaians. Akuapem rap, GA Rap, Dagomba Rap, Fanti Rap, and ofcourse Ewe Rap, were some of the most common languages that dominated the Hip Life scene. This is where the name EDEM (Formerly Ayigbe Edem) appears in the Hip Life Book!
Edem hails from Dzodze in the Volta Region, and I can say he had the best education he could get in the Volta Region. He attended his primary and Junior Secondary school at Amazing Love School; which is a private school and obviously the best across the region… He then continued to Bishop Herman Secondary School, which was and still one of the best secondary Schools in the Volta region as well… Edem spent most of his early stages of life in Aflao (The last town before the Togo border) and Accra…
During his school days, he has been active musically and kept entertaining his mates with performances together with his other 5 members of the group they formed called “RingMasters“… After school, he decided to look further for opportunities to achieve his dreams as a musician. Mr. Edward Nana Poku Osei popularly known as Da’ Hammer began a compilation series to bring together artistes and give them the platform to share their talent with the world. The First compilation was “Sounds Of Our Time” which featured lots of artistes including Agbeko who was the only Ewe rapper on that compilation, with “Wototome” (They/We came through). Da’ Hammer then came out with the second compilation dubbed “The Crusade Of The Lost Files“, which also introduced Edem to world with with the massive hit; “Wotome Woshie” (We came through and the run away) in 2006 and he has since been crowned as the most skilful Ewe rapper ever!
I sometimes see my self as a very lucky person because, that is the time I happen to meet Hammer in person and sometimes go to studio sessions with him… (Dont Hate Because I know People… LOL) That was just by the way… I also had the opportunity to see Edem freestyle a couple of times and trust me, I was his biggest fan! I can speak Ewe very fluently, and listening to this guy rap, just blows me off! You could hear whatever he says from word to word and you are assured of listening to something typical and not the “Accra Ewe” sort of thing… (You Know What I mean right?) I could rap the whole “Wotomo Woshi” like I wrote it myself… LOL
Since then, Edem’s songs has been enjoyed by everybody no matter the language difference because apart from the lyrics, the rhythm and style will just move you! He released his debut album; Volta Regime in 2009 followed by his second Album; Mass Production in 2011 and we should be Expecting Books and Rhymes anytime soon! Edem keeps improving on his style and gets much better with time! His latest releases gone viral especially “Koene” (Both Original and Remix)… We do believe Edem is the pride of Volta and a promising artiste for the future! We at Loud Sound Ghana chose him to be the Artiste of the Month because he deserves it and he is definitely a big inspiration to all the upcoming artistes from the Volta Region… Check out the official video for “Koene” below and download mp3 as well… Follow on twitter: @iamEdem
